Oxygen in the blood is carried by hemoglobin, a globular protein that contains a “heme,” a structure made of iron. If a person is deficient in iron, hemoglobin is not able to properly distribute oxygen throughout the body. The oxygen binds to the heme and in blood lacking iron, the oxygen can’t bind and it can’t be transported.

    hope this helps!
